Phases of Team development

Teams are the building blocks that hold your organization togetherHowever forming a good and reliable team takes time and your effort. Every team goes through several phases of development.

And today, I’d like to tell you my vision of each stage, using well-known methodologies for a team’s stages of development. Eventually, highly efficient teams always have a positive impact on the business, rarely make mistakes and miss opportunities. But even best team in the world need help, to maintain their efficiency over time.

What is teambuilding? Why it’s so important?

What is the recipe for successful achievement?
To my mind there are just four essential ingredients: Choose a career you love….
Give it the best there is in you…. Seize your opportunities….
And be a member of the team.

Team building is a process that develops cooperation and teamwork within a work unit. Creating an effective team requires common goals, respect to each member and motivation.

How to do it? Tuckman’s Stages model

Graphic2According to Bruce Tuckman, there are five stages of small group development: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning.

Let’s find out what are they.

Forming

This stage is like the first dating.

Usually, every new member expects to have a positive experience and is excited about a team work.
In the same time, they have a question: “Will I fit this team?”.
“How should I behave”?

It’s a time when the team discusses its purpose, defines and assigns tasks, established timelines, and begins forming personal relationships.

How can you help them?

You need to create good orientation process, to set up a mission, goals for a team.

Storming

The stage of group development when the team clarifies its goals and its strategy for achieving them.

On this stage, many teams fail. It often starts when there is a conflict between working styles of team members and in the end it can be frustrated or cause anger.
During this stage, members can argue with others or become critical of the team’s goal.

How can you help them?

You can break larger goals into small, achievable steps and resolve conflicts swiftly if they occur.

Norming

The stage of group development when the team establishes its values for how individuals will interact and collaborate. Each member feels an increasing acceptance of others and it makes the team stronger and end product richer.

This time team members communicate more and have the willingness to share their ideas and help each other.

How can you help them?
The best option – is to let team members take responsibility for the development progress. Also, you can arrange a team-building event it will increase cohesion and bring harmony in relationships between team members.

Performing

The stage of group development when team members have productive relationships and are able to communicate and coordinate effectively and efficiently.

What can you do on this stage?
You can let your hair down and delegate tasks and projects.
And when you see that the process is successful – you can start focusing on other goals.

Adjourning

As the group project ends, the group disbands in the adjournment phase. At this stage team members may feel sadness  about the team’s ending, or a deep satisfaction about team’s achievements.

This is time to celebrate the project’s ending, keep positive memories, and be off to new challenges.

 Summarizing all above mentioned phases…

Your aim as a team leader  – is to help your team perform well as quickly as possible.
And here are strategies, that can help you to turn everyday moments into team-building activities.

  1. Tell them the details. Make sure, that everyone is on the same page and they know about specific goals, deadlines, responsibilities, rewards, and outcomes.
  2. Keep communication open and encourage the team to talk with each other about the work. Updates on progress, changes and challenges should be shared among the team members regularly.
  3. Encourage feedback and innovational ideas.
  4. Use team-building exercise to build strong relationships and collaboration. It can be camping, paintball games, and other activities together.
  5. Set basic rules for solving conflicts. Ideally, the group must generate these rules, so that the team members are more likely to follow them.

By using this strategy, you can help build and maintain a happy and effective team.
And it was a long road, but now we have happy, productive teams that can easily collaborate together.
